What is difference between Aerial Yoga and Mat Yoga

Thinking about trying aerial yoga but not sure how it compares to your regular mat practice? You’re not alone — this is one of the most common questions we hear! Let’s break it down in a way that’s easy to understand. 🌿

Both aerial yoga and mat yoga are rooted in the same beautiful tradition of yoga. Both focus on breath, mindful movement, and connecting with your body. But the experience of each? Quite different — and honestly, many of our students find they complement each other perfectly.

Mat Yoga: Grounded & Empowering

Mat yoga is practiced entirely on the floor, using your own strength, balance, and flexibility to move through poses. It’s wonderfully grounding — you feel connected to the earth beneath you, and every pose is an opportunity to build real physical and mental strength.

Mat yoga is fantastic for:

✦ Developing a consistent foundation of yoga poses and alignment

✦ Building discipline, focus, and breath awareness

✦ Challenging your balance and body control

✦ Accessible anywhere, any time — just a mat and some floor space!

Aerial Yoga: Playful, Spacious & Supported

Aerial yoga lifts you off the mat (literally!) using a soft fabric hammock suspended from the ceiling. The hammock acts as a supportive partner — helping you access deeper stretches, safe inversions, and movements that can be difficult on a mat.

Aerial yoga is wonderful for:

✦ Spinal decompression — gentle traction through the spine feels absolutely incredible

✦ Accessing flexibility with support — the hammock assists your body into deeper positions

✦ Experiencing inversions safely — going upside down without pressure on your neck or spine

✦ Adding an element of joy and play to your practice

So… Which One Is Right for You?

The beautiful truth is: you don’t have to choose! Many of our students do both, and find they bring out the best in each other. Mat yoga strengthens the foundation; aerial yoga expands the possibilities.
